My operating system is better than your operating system.

Linux is almost certainly a better operating system than yours is. It's more stable, more secure, much less prone to viruses, and way more fun to use (especially if you're a geek). Dispite what you've heard it's generally very easy to use and probably has all of the software that you'd want to use from day to day. And did I mention that some very good distrobutions (versions) are available for free?

I strongly and hartely recomend that you ckeck it out, which is an easy thing to do. No risk to your current system (regardless of how bad it is and how much it ought to be replaced anyway) need be involved. A number of Linux distrobutions that come on what's called a 'live CD'. Just order a CD on line or download the 'CD immage' and burn it to your own disk (a geek may be helpfull in asisting you with that), pop it in your CD-ROM drive and, assuming that your computer can boot from a CD (and almost all of them can) you'll be running Linux in just a few minuets without ever touching anything on your hard drive.* Once you've learned how good Linux realy is, you can use the installer that comes on the 'live CD' to put it on your hard drive and kiss that crappy operating system you've been using goodby forever.

Some of my favorite 'live CD' Linux distrobutions are:

  • Knoppix - A great all around live CD, but maybe a little tricky to install.
  • Mepis - A very good live CD that's super easy to install.
  • Damn Small Linux - A full featured distrobution that can run from a tiny, business-card sized CD. Great for trying out on older systems that don't have lots of memory.
* - This may be handy if you want to boot into Windows one last time so that you can say goodby.
