Hopper54

Often I do sit and think,
when others think I sit and stink.
Come and sit and think with me.

Order, the first: What's in a name?

Not too long ago, after picking up my first laptop with a wireless card installed, I also bought my first wireless router. One's not much good without the other. Anyway, while I was setting it up I felt an urge. You know the one. Nature was calling and she's wasn't going to take "no" for an answer. So I plugged everything in, picked up my laptop and headed for the toilet.

Everything worked. I was taking a comfortable poop with my laptop perched on the bathroom scale, and I was surfing away, marveling at my new technology. It was nice, I thought, to be able to sit on the hopper and still check my e-mail, or whatever else I liked, at a whopping 54 megabits per second. It was an epiphany, and I knew I would build a web site dedicated to it. Here it is.

Order, the second: What the hell is this place?

First and foremost, this is a place for random thoughts. Some people might call it a 'blog', but blogs are trendy and I've never been one for trendy, so I'm not going to call it that. But all real men know (and, I suspect, many women as well) that yon hopper is a great place for undisturbed thinking. So I have resolved to make note of those thoughts that occur to me there (perhaps on my trusty laptop) and to expound upon them here.

Secondly, it's a place to experiment on web page building and hosting. I'm a computer geek in training, and I spend waaaaay too much time in front of these things. So I went out and got myself a nice desktop PC, loaded Linux on it* and began writing and serving these pages. It's fun and I'm learning things in the process. We geeks are into that whole learning thing.

Order, the Third: Linux Advocacy

or, my OS is better than your OS.

I'm a proud Linux geek. Years ago I finally got fed up with the viruses, instability, slowness, cost, and all the other negative things you can think of about Windows and decided to make the switch to this strange new 'free' operating system. I am so glad I did!
